It is the detailed story of Scott's three year and final unto death journey of scientific discovery and ultimately reaching the south pole (unfortunately, Amundsun got there first). Cherry's account of his winter trek is harrowing and his use of diaries of his companions are used to fill in the blanks and give another perspective is very effective. Let me just say that having read The Last Place on Earth, Cherry-Gerard gives a different and way more positive perspective of Wilson, who he worked and toiled with and also Scott, and now I appreciate both of those characters a lot more, as they both had their good sides as leaders.
