Streetsblog first reported on the sinkhole, located just north of 181st Street in Washington Heights, almost a year ago.

According to the precinct, they have experienced a “significant uptick in robberies” over the course of the last month, representing a 286 percent increase from 2019. After the initial fencing off and some calls to 311, the city responded by installing the temporary span shown below. According to Leo, who has been walking on the Greenway for 50 years, “It started deteriorating a long time ago, they just don’t act quickly.”This is the aforementioned “giant” sinkhole, which has necessitated blocking off the Greenway for several blocks.

Now, people must navigate around the barrier, which takes up a significant portion of the road space.
