SUZUKA, Japan -- The powerful typhoon that is heading for Japan's main island this weekend could impact on the Formula One Japanese Grand Prix.Typhoon Hagibis is expected to hit western and eastern Japan between Saturday and Sunday, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. Currently categorized as a Super Typhoon, one of the most powerful tropical cyclones of the year is expected to weaken slightly before hitting Japan — should it continue to track as expected — but according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center will still be “a very strong typhoon.”Although a major improvement in the weather is expected on Sunday, the potential path of the typhoon is likely to result in severe weather at Suzuka on Saturday, putting qualifying at risk.
Named ‘Hagibis’, the typhoon which is categorised at the top descriptor known in Japan as ‘violent’ is expected to bring torrential rain and winds up to 225kph. It has urged people to take precautions with the storm approaching.
